END-OF-COURSE MATH AND SCIENCE TESTS ARE REPLACING FCAT

This year Gibbs High School will be administering 3 End-of-Course assessments: Algebra I, Geometry, and Biology I.  These computer-based tests are phasing out the FCAT to completely replace it by 2014.  Testing for these assessments will take place between April 23 and May 11, 2012.

The Algebra 1 EOC assessment has replaced the Math FCAT for students who entered high school after 2009.  All students taking Algebra 1 or Algebra 1B will have the EOC count as 30% of their final grade.  Students who are currently in 9th grade must pass the EOC for high school graduation and course credit.  Algebra I students in grades 10-12 must also take the assessment but it will only count toward their grade, not graduation. There will be no final exam in Algebra I classes as the EOC assessment is comprehensive.

All Geometry students will be taking the Geometry EOC assessment and all Biology I students will be taking the Biology EOC to form a baseline test for upcoming years.  For the 2011-2012 school year, it is not a graduation requirement to pass these assessments. These EOCs will count as 30% of the final grade toward course credit.  These assessments are comprehensive, so there will be no final exam in these subjects.  After this year, the Geometry and Biology I EOC assessments will also become a graduation requirement for students.

As the End-of-Course assessments are computer-based, students will have the opportunity to participate in a practice test (ePAT) to become familiar with the test      set-up and online tools to be used during testing.  Students may also review the ePAT at home at www.FLAssessments.com/ePAT, practicing as often as necessary prior to testing.

If you have any questions, please contact Nancy Gaesser, GHS Testing Coordinator at 727-893-5452 ext. 2202.  Additional information is available at the Florida Department of Education’s website at http://fcat.fldoe.org/fcat2/cbt.asp.

We appreciate your support in ensuring a successful test administration this spring.
